Adaptive Swings on Inclusive Playgrounds
Bringing Play to All
We believe in creating public play spaces where children of all ages and abilities can play together. An inclusive playground takes away the barriers to exclusion, both physical and social, providing a “sensory rich” experience for all.
Sensory-rich commercial playgrounds with opportunities for climbing, jumping, spinning and rocking are important to children for fun and exercise. Additionally, it helps their bodies organize and regulate their sensory systems and stimulate brain development.
Swinging, in particular, can have a powerful impact on the brain’s ability to process and use sensory information. Whether the child is swinging on a belt swing, sitting up with back support in a full bucket seat, spinning in a tire swing, or sitting face-to-face on a multi-user swing or glider, these movements can act as a powerful activator on the body’s systems.
Therapeutic or adaptive swings offer vestibular stimulation to maintain balance and body posture and are incredibly effective with sensory processing disorders and other special needs. The many benefits of adaptive playground swings include:
- Strengthens vestibular system
- Improves balance and coordination
- Improves spatial awareness and focus
- Boosts mood and can serve as reward for positive behaviors
- Develops important motor skills
- Soothes overstimulated senses
- Strengthens and builds muscles
- Provides opportunity for social development and emotional connection.
